Hey there! I’m Jeanette
a yoga teacher, women’s health physical therapist and BoneFit Instructor who stives to create hope and a plan for people with aging bodies.
I have had many years of repeated and nonsensical injuries that would stop me in my tracks, taking me away from the athletics that I really love. A random fall skiing injured my shoulder. I was unable to go to my weekly yoga class that was a key stress management tool. I felt isolated and depressed. A home practice prescribed by my yoga teacher lifted me back up giving my overactive mind something to do. The poses created strength and flexibility while my body recovered.
My yoga teacher training and then certifying to teach the Fishman Yoga vs Osteoporosis has focused my career. I find myself teaching yoga through the lens of a physical therapist, using the postures, the breathing exercises, and the mindset to help my clients with osteoporosis feel confident, strong, agile and less stressed.
My Journey Into Physical Therapy…
Nagging running injuries led me to see a Physical Therapist and something clicked. I wanted to understand how the body, as a machine, worked and connected all its parts.
Physical Therapy internships brought me to Colorado where the sunshine and outdoors became my playground for almost 29 years. In 2021 we relocated to Mid-Coast Maine and love being near the ocean.
Women’s Health…
I was asked to learn about treatment for incontinence to expand the Physical Therapy clinic services. Treatment of the pelvic floor was new to me and I was less than enthused to be tasked with this.
The book, “Staying Dry” by Kathryn Burgio, MD, introduced the musculoskeletal connection between the bladder and pelvic pain. Turns out, these issues aren’t just in women’s heads!
As I pursued my education to treat pelvic floor issues, I soon found myself working with not only bladder and bowel issues, but also pelvic pain, prenatal/postpartum and symptoms as a result of post GI and GYN cancers in both men and women. It became about improving quality of life for these patients.
As part of my Women’s Health studies, I studied with John F. Barnes for his myofascial release techniques. The technique is a gentle hands-on approach that releases fascial restrictions that can limit movement and range of motion in the body. It may be just what you need to create a breakthrough in your healing.
Certified Manual Physical Therapist
(through NAIOMT)...
In my efforts to treat the body holistically, I studied to become a Certified Manual Physical Therapist to fully understand the anatomy and mechanics of every joint in the body. This provided an opportunity to look deeper and to treat the cause of a client’s pain, rather than treating just the pain alone, which results in better, long-lasting results for you.
Yoga…
Yoga was recommended to me by so many of my healthcare practitioners over the years. When a colleague invited me to join her in a class. I struggled through it wondering why some poses were so difficult!
But something in my gut said, “Go back.”
I ended up in the class of the studio owner and was inspired to ask for a few private sessions. After all, I was a Physical Therapist. I couldn’t risk hurting myself in class! I needed a little more one-on-one instruction.
My instructor convinced me to take her 200-hour Vinyasa Yoga teacher training. After the training, my husband even noticed that I was mentally and physically more flexible, managed stress better, and was in the best shape of my life.
It was apparent that I had to include yoga as part of the physical therapy experience that I offered my patients.
I specialize in creating customized plans that will integrate restorative therapies that help you become more In Tune with your Body.
Yoga for Osteoporosis…
In 2017, I trained with Dr. Loren Fishman to teach his Yoga for Osteoporosis.
Since completing his training program, I have taught private, semi-private, and workshop classes teaching his series of poses.
I am on a mission to help clients move with safer body alignment, stand taller and stay strong and agile so that we can change the statistics and decrease the number of falls and fractures due to osteoporosis.
From Hospital Outpatient Clinic to Private Practice…
After almost 29 years in large clinics from acute care hospitals, to private practices and most recently in a large outpatient hospital-based rehab clinic, I wanted to make a change to a more holistic focus. I was ready to:
Spend time with my clients
Minimize the red tape
Really be able to treat clients holistically rather than having to focus on one specific joint or area of the body
All of this has brought me to enter a new phase of my career. I now offer specialized one-on-one holistic care, to help clients find a sustainable path to an active lifestyle.
